Today in Human Geo and Notes

Today in Human Geo, we talked about Globalization and took notes. I think I might have taken a little too much but I guess that’s better than not enough….

Globalization: interconnectedness; being connected with other countries

-the expansion of International culture,  economic, and political activities
-we have a huge effect on other countries economically

Globalization is not a recent phenomenon and has been around for a very long time.

Silk Road
-a group of roads and passage ways that led to a place where outsiders could trade with China, the only country that could get them silk

The Americanization of other Counties
-Restaurants originally from the U.S., such as McDonalds and KFC, were made in other countries such as China and Japan, and added some of their cultural foods to the menu.
-Family life and interaction actually is beginning to decrease because the amount of traditional sit-down dinners decreased.
-People started to buy fast food when they were out because, hence the name “fast food,” was faster and easier than having to go home and make a home-cooked meal.
-“Americanizing” Japanese Culture

BC=Before Christ
AD=After Death
BCE= Before Common Era (made for people that weren’t religious)

Spread of Faiths and Religions
-dominant religion – Roman Catholic
-most religions can be found in all countries
-almost no religions started in the U.S., the religion moved here as people with different faiths moved her

Cellphones Moved Around the World
-many things need to use a cellphone
            -cell tower
            -charger
            -electricity
            -internet
Africa is now starting to connect with the rest of the world

Understanding More than One Language
-not just because they have to take a language in high school
-many people want to learn more than one

Telephones
-When you call a company (ex. Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish)
-Many companies have Spanish Speaking Customers so they want them to understand more

Shipping
-How do clothes made in  China get to a store in America
-they ship them on ships
-they will pull the same size boxes (what the product is carried in) put them onto a train-, then a truck to the desired store

United Nations Building
-it is in NY
-all countries flags are outside
-settle differences inside this building
-many Americans don’t want us to be apart of this

Film Industry
-US exports many things  - things sold over seas
-of all the industries where we make money, the number one industry is the film industry
-big Blockbuster movies are played in theaters around the world
-illegally downloading movies and buying pirated movies hurts our number one industry in the US

People from all around the World
-people from all around the world live in many different countries for many different reasons
