9/22 Human Geo

Today, in Human Geo consisted of a lot of note taking. We learned about reasons for migration, push/pull forces, and the Total Fertility Rate, (TFR). The class seemed very short today, but we still got in a good amount of notes. Here are the notes I took today:

Why do people migrate?

Push Forces
Civil War
-environmental degradation
-unemployment or underemployment
-religious or ethnic persecution

Pull Forces
-better economic opportunity
-better health services
-religious freedom
-political freedom

Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
- The total fertility rate is the average number of children born per woman
For a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1
-If the TFR is higher than 2.1, the population rises
- If the TFR is lower than 2.1, the population falls

The world TFR is 2.47, it used to be 2.54 two years ago
The US TFR is 2.06
Nigeria’s TFR is 5.38
Japan’s TFR is 1.39
