9/25 in Human Geo

Today, in Human Geo I got my test back, since I didn't get it yesterday because I was on the retreat. I was happy with the grade I got and it proves that studying hard really does pay off. Besides getting my test back, we went over and added a little bit to what we have been learning about, such as Total Fertility Rate and Rate of Natural Increase. One thing I specifically remember reviewing was that for a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1. Any less show how the population is decreasing and anymore, increasing. The only notes I added to my previous notes that I didn't already have were some causes for push and pull of countries such as: Poverty could push a person out of a country. Violence would also be a reason to push citizens out of their country, as well as high taxes would if a person couldn't afford to live in a certain state. Job opportunities would pull people into moving to their country such as people moving into the United States.

9/22 Human Geo

Today, in Human Geo consisted of a lot of note taking. We learned about reasons for migration, push/pull forces, and the Total Fertility Rate, (TFR). The class seemed very short today, but we still got in a good amount of notes. Here are the notes I took today:

Why do people migrate?

Push Forces
Civil War
-environmental degradation
-unemployment or underemployment
-religious or ethnic persecution

Pull Forces
-better economic opportunity
-better health services
-religious freedom
-political freedom

Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
- The total fertility rate is the average number of children born per woman
For a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1
-If the TFR is higher than 2.1, the population rises
- If the TFR is lower than 2.1, the population falls

The world TFR is 2.47, it used to be 2.54 two years ago
The US TFR is 2.06
Nigeria’s TFR is 5.38
Japan’s TFR is 1.39

Measuring Population

Crude Birth Rate: number of births per 1,000 of the population
Crude Death Rate: number of deaths per 1,000 of the population
Rate of Natural Increase: produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
-this gives us the the annual natural growth rate - in percentage form - for a country or region
Net Migration Rate: the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year
-an excess of persons entering the country is net migration
-written as a positive number
Ex. Canada had 5.56 migrants per 1,000 population
Now Canada has 5.66 migrants per 1,000 population
-United States had 3.62 migrants per 1,000 population
Now the United States has 2.45 migrants per 1,000 population
-an excess of persons leaving the country is net emigration
-written as a negative number
Ex. Mexico had -3.51 migrants per 1,000 population
Now Mexico has -1.64 migrants per 1,000 population
-Argentina has 0 migrants per 1,000 population

9/18

Today in Human Geo, we found out that we will be getting our tests back most likey Monday. Next we started to take notes in our new section. It’s called “Population And Migration.” Some things I wrote down are: There are over 1 billion people on this planet. The earth is increases in population by more than 73 million people per year. 90% of the population’s growth takes place in the developing countries such as Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America. A developed country is a country that is modern with technology, where as a developing country would not have a whole lot of technology and probably doesn’t have it all together. Life Expectancy is the average number of years to be lived by a group born in the same in the year and generally the same area. Longer life expectancies are more common now that smoking is not AS common, and our advances in medicine have saved many people.

9/17 Wed. Today in Human Geo.

Today in Human Geo, we had our test. I felt pretty prepared and happy with the amount of studying I did and felt confident that I would do well. We got the test and it seemed pretty easy. One thing was kind of funny to me though. We had a whole discussion on how true and false questions aren’t that great because of how misleading they can be, yet one of the first questions was something along the lines of, “Is Wikipedia a primary source? True or False?” Besides that, everything was basically smooth sailing except for maybe two questions. To my surprise, the questions weren’t as hard as I had originally thought. I really hope I’m not saying how I felt the test was easy but I actually didn’t do so well on it. One thing about me is that I’m not always the fastest test taker, so I wasn’t surprised when I was down to about five minutes and I still hadn’t completely finished, so I was sort of rushing to finish my last short answer question.  Other than that, I feel I did well on the test.

Today in Human Geo.

The first thing we did in Human Geo., was sing happy birthday to Sydney. After a little while, we started reviewing for our test that will be Wednesday. We had to review today because tomorrow Mr. Schick will be out of town. The things that will be on the test are A Message to Garcia, Ancient Greece, Did You Know 3.0 video, and notes on Globalization and Americanization. We should know about what war was A Message to Garcia taking place in, what President asked Rowan to go deliver the message to Garcia, and the moral of the story is and why Elbert Hubbard wrote it. Then we need to know the Ancient Greece definitions and about them. We have to be able to give a small summary of the facts. Lastly, we need to know about the Globalization and Americanization. We have to know why life expectencies are dropping because of Americanization. Lastly, I have to know some positives and negatives of Globalization and Americanization.

Today in Human Geo and Notes

Today in Human Geo, we talked about Globalization and took notes. I think I might have taken a little too much but I guess that’s better than not enough….

Globalization: interconnectedness; being connected with other countries

-the expansion of International culture,  economic, and political activities
-we have a huge effect on other countries economically

Globalization is not a recent phenomenon and has been around for a very long time.

Silk Road
-a group of roads and passage ways that led to a place where outsiders could trade with China, the only country that could get them silk

The Americanization of other Counties
-Restaurants originally from the U.S., such as McDonalds and KFC, were made in other countries such as China and Japan, and added some of their cultural foods to the menu.
-Family life and interaction actually is beginning to decrease because the amount of traditional sit-down dinners decreased.
-People started to buy fast food when they were out because, hence the name “fast food,” was faster and easier than having to go home and make a home-cooked meal.
-“Americanizing” Japanese Culture

BC=Before Christ
AD=After Death
BCE= Before Common Era (made for people that weren’t religious)

Spread of Faiths and Religions
-dominant religion – Roman Catholic
-most religions can be found in all countries
-almost no religions started in the U.S., the religion moved here as people with different faiths moved her

Cellphones Moved Around the World
-many things need to use a cellphone
            -cell tower
            -charger
            -electricity
            -internet
Africa is now starting to connect with the rest of the world

Understanding More than One Language
-not just because they have to take a language in high school
-many people want to learn more than one

Telephones
-When you call a company (ex. Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish)
-Many companies have Spanish Speaking Customers so they want them to understand more

Shipping
-How do clothes made in  China get to a store in America
-they ship them on ships
-they will pull the same size boxes (what the product is carried in) put them onto a train-, then a truck to the desired store

United Nations Building
-it is in NY
-all countries flags are outside
-settle differences inside this building
-many Americans don’t want us to be apart of this

Film Industry
-US exports many things  - things sold over seas
-of all the industries where we make money, the number one industry is the film industry
-big Blockbuster movies are played in theaters around the world
-illegally downloading movies and buying pirated movies hurts our number one industry in the US

People from all around the World
-people from all around the world live in many different countries for many different reasons
